From that point, in 1984 with little knowledge about porcine artificial insemination, the company bought four males and dedicated to a new company initiative. In this sense and in order to guarantee the quality in all company projects, Maria Àngels trained specifically in this field and, afterwards, she set up a laboratory in the same country house and, some years later, she transformed all her farms to devote them to porcine multiplication.
Little by little and with the constant aim of offering a good service in all senses, the company started working to the point that their production capacity was limited. At that point, the main aim of the company was the elaboration and commercialisation of high quality semen doses.
In 1996, when she had 100 males and an amount of 35000 sold doses per year, Semen Cardona is formally created. Acquired experience in artificial insemination techniques, together with the demand of fresh semen doses in the sector and the great increase of latest years allowed the company to inaugurate a new centre in Cardona in 1998. Afterwards, it was moved to the new facilities, placed in a pine area in Cardona, far from other porcine exploitations, and so, a new Artificial Insemination Centre (CIA), with a capacity for 163 boars was created. In the design of the CIA many health and transparency aspects which clients appreciated, together with the highest possible biosafety measures were taken into account. To minimize the source of risk of pathogen agents entry, the production part (spaces in contact with pigs) and the elaboration part (laboratory and doses fine tuning) were separated.
These new facilities have biosafety measures like double fencing, fodder downloading via from the outside, loading jack, as well as a system to guarantee a constant temperature between 19º and 24º during all the year. Moreover, always with the aim of producing high quality semen doses, the centre has two laboratories, one for semen production and contrast and another one for microbiology and serology, where a strict bacteriological control of semen and water destined to doses production is carried out.
It was the first multigenetic centre in Spain : Boars belonged to different genetics. It accomplished all current European normative and it was the first centre in the state that was registered and approved to produce and commercialise porcine semen to be sold all around the world.
